Chapter 18

Trap. That wasn’t a word he’d wanted to hear, not at all. Unless maybe it was one he’d sprung. Instantly, Nicolas was alert, scanning the horizon in all directions like some kind of overzealous meerkat. He didn’t question Auron’s wisdom; the hero knew his stuff. He just wished he could see where it would come from. Everything seemed the same dull grey in every direction around them.

Will it come from the left? The right? Behind us?

Frantically, his eyes darted in all directions, chasing the imagined threats in his peripheral vision.

I can’t spiral now. There’s going to be a fight.

It was sadly inevitable, and he had to be ready for it.

‘Advance,’ Auron shouted, signalling with his sword to one of the ranks of skeleton soldiers.

Slowly, the troop plodded forward in unison towards the oncoming men, spears lowered and ready. The wraiths seemed unbothered by the attack, further reinforcing that this was a trap.

‘Don’t we need them here?’ As much as he trusted Auron, sending away a third of their force didn’t seem so wise.

‘I don’t rate these skeleton soldiers much.’ The hero was just as alert as him but managing it much better. ‘Might as well have some of them kill those advancing wraiths.’

Nicolas looked back at the oncoming figures. They were the same as the warriors he’d seen with Vargas before. Now that the panic of having to flee the caves was dissipating, they were bounding towards the skeletons, weapons ready.

From his view, it was hard to tell if any of the wraiths fell as the two forces met. At least their warriors had the numbers advantage, which was the lynchpin of Sha’then’s whole campaign strategy.

Failing campaign strategy.

‘Form a circle,’ Auron commanded the remaining skeletons. Almost painfully slowly, the skeletons marched into a circle, with him, Auron, and Allius at their centre.

‘Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear,’ Allius mumbled to himself, clutching his book to him tightly.

Can they not move faster? No wonder Sha’then kept losing.

Eventually, shields were locked, and spears pointed outwards, ready for attack. Beyond them, the battle continued; blade met blade. Wraiths turned to smoke and skeletal frames were broken apart. It seemed to be going well for them, as far as he could tell.

Beside him, Auron looked grim. ‘They’re toying with us. No way they should’ve let us get into formation like that before springing their trap. Someone’s showing off.’

Someone was definitely showing off. The cloud above them bulged and pulsated, rolling thunder assaulting their ears. Large columns of black smog descended from it at four points, surrounding their formation in a pattern marking out a square. From there, the smog circled until all four points were attached to each other. Beyond the impenetrable black wall, the sounds of battle ceased instantly.

‘Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.’ He didn’t want to shout at Allius to shut up, but he really wanted him to stop doing that.

‘Shut up,’ Auron snapped before turning to him. ‘Stay alert, kid,’ the hero counselled. As if he needed telling.
